NAU'S ASCE CONCRETE CANOE

The ASCE National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC) provides student engineers with a practical application of the engineering principles we learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills we will need in our careers. The event challenges our knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.

Team 2013 (NIGHT FURY) has decided to leave all previous canoe designs behind and instead use a new, sleak, speed oriented canoe design.

Follow the links above to discover more about us, the engineers that made concrete canoe 2013 a reality, how the canoe was designed, the unique post-tensioned concrete reinforcement, as well as the story of how NIGHT FURY performed in competition.

BACKGROUND

The NAU concrete canoe team was founded in the early 1980’s, the canoe team enjoyed several years of success at the regional level. From 1989 to 1993 NAU made appearances at the National Concrete Canoe Competition (NCCC). Since then, NAU has failed to qualify for the NCCC.  Despite this NAU has experienced some success at the regional Pacific Southwest Conference (PSWC), which consists of 18 schools from Southern California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. In 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 NAU placed in the top five for the overall team scoring at the PSWC. However, in recent years NAU’s concrete canoes have had difficulty repeating this success. The hull design previously used by the by NAU for competition was designed for stability and tracking; however, this hull proved to be difficult to maneuver. This year, the team sought to implement a new and unique hull design. Night Fury features a new asymmetrical, v-shaped hull design engineered for speed and maneuverability.
